Yeah...I took the hyperbole with a grain of salt. It is awful that a government would gleefully bulldoze a house of worship unnecessarily, but the two intifadas and the multiple wars Israel has fought seem to be more aggregious than this (if one were to rank this sort of thing).
You're right Michael, thats a good point. I still think it is a tad overstated since some Muslim countries have done worse to their own Jewish populations. I also think the author is understating what Stalin did to Russian Jews. But that's really here nor there.
while it is awful that houses of worship of any religious group are desecrated and destroyed anywhere in the world, the incident in tajikistan cannot begin to compare in importance to the bombing of the mosque in iraq, as the author suggests. the author of the piece comes close to accusing the international media of being anti-semitic in their "refusal" to cover an event of such "magnitude" (that is, to give the two events more equal column space, TV time, etc.). however, i'd like to point out, that tajikistan is not an area of global strategic importance, and the destruction of the temple has not lead to hundreds of more deaths in jewish-tajik sectarian fighting which may bring about a civil war in the heart of the world's largest oil producing region, the stabilization of which is the major foreign policy strategy and military objecting of the world's only remaining superpower.
which of course is just to say that, in the currency of column inches, the international media values potentially lost american lives more than actually destroyed temples in tajikistan. the outrage it seems, is on page sixteen. what's amazing is that the event got covered at all, and that's only because of jewish organizations like the ISLC.
is that fair? probably not. but jewish tajiks aren't the only ones getting the short end of the stick. sub-saharan africans of all nationalities (with the exception of nelson mandela and expropriated white farmers in zimbabwe) are routinely slaughtered en masse with the slowest and slightest coverage from mainstream media sources. if you think that the genocide in darfur gets sufficient media coverage (which it certainly didn't at the beginning of the genocide) how about the barbarities of the Lord's Resistance Army in uganda? when was the last time we saw a front page article about that?

The author did say by a state on its own Jewish population, not on all Jews everywhere.
